Your Guide to

EUMETCast
On-Line Registration

This information has been prepared by GEO, the Group for Earth Observation. If you have found this information useful, please consider supporting GEO by taking out a year's membership. You can do that by clicking here.
Please note that registration for the reception of EUMETCast services must now be done using the electronic application forms on the EUMETSat website

This guide is for the benefit of amateur and educational users who wish to register for the EUMETCast downlink in order to receive MSG data from Meteosat-9, and AVHRR data from NOAA and MetOp satellites.

Information concerning the hardware and software required to receive weather satellite imagery via EUMETCast can be found by visiting EUMETSAT's Reception Station Set-up page.

If you are ready to register, click this link to proceed straight to the EUMETCast Registration Form.

If you require advice on how to complete this form, read on below ...

Screen 1 - Registration Type

At the foot of the first screen you must select the appropriate type of registration.

Notes:

The 'New user' is for completely new users, who do not yet take a EUMETCast service.

If you already have EUMETCast services, but have not registered electronically before, select 'Existing user requiring additional services' and tick all the services you already take ...

... then click the Next link to continue.

Screen 2 - User Details and Customer Organisation

Complete the relevant fields as illustrated below.

Do be sure to include your e-mail address. EUMETSAT use e-mail a lot for communication—this is how you will be advised of your user passsword, for example. The e-mail address will not be used for spamming.

... then click Next.

Screen 3 - Data Usage and Field of Application

In the first section Tick only the relevant box. If you are a home user (as most are) then tick the 'Personal Use' box.

Please note that here, 'Educational Use' refers specifically to schools, colleges, etc. (EUMETSAT now wish to differentiate these two groups, even though they are treated the same in terms of data access).

In the second section, select one or more options, as appropriate.

In the final section, most private users should select 'No', but if you intend to 'publish' images on your website, via SSTV or in print please tick 'Yes' and inform EUMETSAT of your intended use. They will contact you regarding this. In most cases - use of 'essential data' and 'non timely' licensed data will not invalidate your licence.

Click Next when you have done all this.

Screen 4 - EUMETCast Reception Mode and Band

Make sure you check the top option, EUMETCast.

Select your region (Europe, Africa, Americas).

As before, click Next to continue.

Screen 5 - Service Type (recommendations)

First and foremost, you will almost certainly wish to apply for the ¼-hourly Meteosat transmissions as these are required for creating animations. When you tick this box, the following 8 data items are automatically auto-completed.
If you wish a complete geostationary view of the Earth you can also select the ½-hourly HRI 'Indian Ocean Data' and the 'Third Party' GOES and MT-SAT options.
If you tick the 'EARS-AVHRR' Regional Data Service, this will bring you near-real-time NOAA-17 and NOAA-18 (and later MetOp) high-resolution data from the local European stations.
For the one-orbit-delayed, world-wide, high resolution data from the MetOp satellite you need to check the MetOp AVHRR box in the Global Data Service (Level 1 data) section.

The form lists much additional data, very little of which is of interest to the amateur. You are strongly advised not to tick boxes 'just for the sake of it'. If you are an inexperienced user and do not fully understand how to manage such large quantities of data, you will almost certainly run your computer to a standstill!

You are recommended to select the options shown below—you can always add additional services in the future, should you require them.

Click Next to continue.

You can read details about the various MetOp services listed above here

Screen 6 - EUMETCast Requirements

If you are a first-time user you must order at least

• one EUMETCast Client Software Licence Package, and
• one EUMETCast Key Unit

by entering '1' in each of the boxes at the top of the page.

Note
You only need to complete this section if you are a new user and as yet do not possess the Client Software and Key Unit.

• The Key Unit (or eToken) is a required item for most of the high-rate data services.
Without a Key Unit you will only be provided with the 6-hourly 'essential' data.
